Within FIRESENSE, five demonstrators will be undertaken in four different countries: Greece, Turkey, Tunisia and Italy. In each of these sites the project participants will strive to adapt the FIRESENSE services to the specific conditions and needs of the local environment. A first survey of these demonstration sites was carried out during the proposal preparation phase and the results of the survey are summarised below. Current status The protection of the majority of archaeological sites in Greece is based on human observation. Most of these monuments are constantly threatened by wildfires due to the conducive climate and the flammable vegetation surroundings. Partner responsible IX Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Hellenic Ministry of Culture
Current status In Turkey, wildfires constitute the greatest threat for the natural vegetation due to the extremely fire-prone Mediterranean environment. The protection of archaeological sites is based mainly on human observation. Partner responsible Bilkent University
Current status The Dodge Hall is selected as a demonstration site, because it has a large interior space, as most monumental buildings in Istanbul do (e.g. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque). Therefore, it constitutes an accessible and representative simulation environment for this kind of structure. Partner responsible Bogazici University
Current status In Tunisia, the protection of cultural heritage sites is based on human observation. The forest around the Temple of Water is considered suitable for testing a small-scale application. Partner responsible École Supérieure des Communications de Tunis
Current status The test site is located inside the ANPIL-SIC protected area of Monteferrato-Galceti Park. It is a unique area because of the biodiversity it guests, for most of which it is the locus classicus, and because of the ores of “green marbles of Prato” (serpentine) from which come the green decorations of the most important buildings in Tuscany such as the Duomo of Florence, of Pistoia, etc. Villas, monumental farms and churches (e.g. in Figline) further embellish the area. The area is at strong risk of fire because it is in a pine wood. Partner responsible Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche
